The mass of known asteroids is 1/700-1/1000 of the weight of the Earth. The belt between Jupiter and Mars may contain several billion still undiscovered bodies. At the same time, their size varies from tens of kilometers to dust particles. About the same number of asteroids came out of the belt, according to scientists. Calculations performed by Siegel using the parameters of the hypothetical density and mass of asteroid matter showed that the planet Phaethon could have a diameter of 6880 km. The death of the planet Phaeton

Researchers believe that once a century, one of the bodies can fly near the Earth at a distance less than to the Moon. Once every 250 years, an object can collide with a planet. A blow from a body the size of Hermes, for example, would release the energy of 10,000 hydrogen bombs, each with a yield of 10 Mt. In this case, a crater with a diameter of about 20 km will appear. Impacts of larger bodies, of course, will lead to more serious consequences.
However, scientists reassure humanity that for recent history such cases are unknown and unlikely in the near future. The asteroid survey is currently being carried out by NEOPO. This special institution was created in 1997 by NASA. It manages the program of near-Earth objects. It was in it that among the small bodies a group of elements was distinguished, the orbits of which cross the earth's. The size and time of Phaeton's death

Regarding the time of Phaeton's death, there is no single point of view. The dates given are 3.7-3.8 billion years, 110 million years, 65 million years, 16 million years, 25 thousand years and 12 thousand years ago. Each such date is associated with catastrophic events that occurred in past periods of the geological history of the Earth. As you can see, the spread of values is very significant.
From the possible dates of the death of Phaethon, one can almost certainly exclude 25 thousand years and 12 thousand years. The fact is that in the images of the asteroid Eros, obtained by the NIAR Shoemaker research probe, a layer of regolith is clearly visible. It overlaps bedrock almost everywhere and reaches considerable thickness at the bottom of craters.
Given the extremely slow rate of accumulation of such formations, the age of asteroids can hardly be less than a few million years.
The death of Phaethon 3.7-3.8 billion years ago is also unlikely. The proportion of carbonaceous asteroids in the asteroid belt is too high for this (75%), which are most likely fragments of its crust. And, as is known from the geological history of the Earth, and now Mars, the formation of such a powerful crust should take more than one billion years.
Dates of 110 million years and 65 million years are tied to the time of the great catastrophes on Earth (the latter - to the time of the death of dinosaurs). They are justified only by the fact that they supposedly give an answer to the question of the origin of asteroids (an exploded planet) that collided with the Earth in those distant times.
Among the listed values, the most probable date for the death of Phaethon is 16 million years. This figure has a very serious scientific justification. In the article "Mars before and after the catastrophe" I spoke about the Yamato meteorite discovered in 2000 in the mountains of Antarctica, the surface layers of which are 16 million years old and bear traces of the strongest dynamic stress and melting. According to the similarity of the gas composition of the inclusions of this meteorite and the modern atmosphere of Mars, it was assigned to one of the 20 known Martian meteorites. On this basis, I suggested that the catastrophe on Mars could have happened 16 million years ago. Although the question remained how the meteorite was thrown out of this planet.
If we assume that Phaeton had an atmosphere similar to the atmosphere of Mars and other terrestrial planets and consisting of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon and oxygen, then the Yamato meteorite could be a fragment of the exploded planet Phaeton, and not Mars. In this case, it is much easier to explain how this boulder left its planet.
The most interesting thing is that if the Yamato meteorite is indeed a fragment of Phaethon, the time of the alleged disaster on Mars (16 million years ago) will remain the same. Indeed, in order to reach Mars, flying at a speed of more than 10 km / s. the body should have taken only a few years.

So, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter there is a mass of small bodies revolving around the Sun at the distance at which a large planet should have been, according to the Titius-Bode rule. The famous astronomer and physician Heinrich Olbers, who discovered Pallas and Vesta, suggested that there was once a planet in the place of the current asteroids. From a monstrous impact from the outside or from an internal impact, the planet exploded (!), leaving behind a legacy in the form of asteroids. This hypothetical planet was later named PHAETON, in honor of the son of the sun god Helios. According to Greek mythology, Phaeton stole his fiery chariot from his father (Helios) and went to ride in the sky, but died, crashing along with the chariot. These were the first signs of the notorious ASTEROID DANGER for the Earth. Since Phaeton died from the explosion of a fallen body, then the Earth can suffer the same fate? However, in the 50s of the 20th century, the first but convincing objections based on data on meteorites appeared against Olbers' touching hypothesis about Phaethon. From analyzes of the composition of meteorites, it followed that they are heterogeneous in chemical composition and in no way can they be products of the destruction of a large planet like Earth or Mars, since then they would never have been able to maintain their crystalline structure. In the depths of a massive planet, such a structure would inevitably be destroyed. More detailed studies have shown that the meteorite substance could form and come to its current state only in celestial bodies of asteroid masses and sizes. The last argument in favor of Phaeton's existence was made in the 70s of the last century. For this, its hypothetical mass was calculated and it was shown that the destruction occurred about 16 million years ago. However, it turned out that the energy for the destruction of Phaeton is thousands and tens of thousands of times weaker than necessary. It remained to explain the destruction of the planet by the gravitational influence of Jupiter. It turned out that a close approach to this giant could lead to the destruction of Phaethon! But ... As always, but! If such a rapprochement occurred, then it would be disastrous for Phaethon, but Jupiter itself would suffer greatly. The system of its Galilean satellites would be changed by perturbations to such an extent that even the giant Jupiter would spend 2 billion years to restore it! But, as mentioned above, the catastrophe occurred no more than 16 million years ago. And another argument is not in favor of Phaeton. The fall of large fragments of asteroids to the Earth ends with the formation of craters on its surface. Our planet keeps on its body a lot of giant cosmic wounds called astroblems. On the territory of Russia, the largest astroblem was discovered near the mouth of the Popigai River in northern Siberia. Studies have shown (here it is, the fun begins!) that the astroblem arose during the fall of an asteroid with a diameter of SEVERAL KILOMETERS (!) 30 MILLION years ago. At the same time, a crater of monstrous dimensions was formed - its diameter was about 100 KILOMETERS! The age of known astroblems reaches 700 million years! It should be noted that 65 million years ago, the extinction of dinosaurs and other representatives of the then fauna occurred on Earth. The era of extinction, lasting only about 200 years, swept through the time scale of our planet like a devastating tornado. The sedimentary rocks of the oceanic deposits that formed at that time provide us with documentary evidence of the transience of the drama of the deadly event. Based on their detailed studies, it is believed that an asteroid about 10 kilometers across crashed into the Earth, and as a result of a monstrous explosion, thousands of cubic kilometers of generated dust rose into the atmosphere. This terrible cloud blocked access to the sun's rays for several years, and as a result of the onset of universal darkness on Earth, the process of life-giving photosynthesis was interrupted. World famine has set in. Almost all vertebrates more massive than 20-30 kilograms died of starvation. It is clear that this version also refutes the Phaeton hypothesis. If Phaeton exploded 16 million years ago, then where did the asteroid come from that fell to Earth 65 million years ago? So where did the asteroids come from? The modern model of the origin of the solar system assumes the simultaneous formation of the Sun and planets (including asteroids) from a huge mass of gas, consisting mainly of hydrogen. It is called the solar nebula. Under the influence of gravitational forces, the gaseous nebula was compressed in such a way that the central region became the densest. In the center, the Sun arose, becoming the main object of the entire cloud. The impact of gravitational forces and solar radiation destroyed the original structure of the cloud. Rarefactions and condensations (protoplanets) appeared in it, capturing all the matter that came across in their path. It was from the most massive protoplanets that the planets formed. At the same time, nuclear reactions began on the Sun, converting hydrogen into helium. Thus, about 5 billion years ago, the solar system formed the way we are now observing. Asteroids - the remains of intermediate bodies from which the planets were created, have survived to our time. They never managed to form into a planet due to the proximity of massive Jupiter. The giant planet, by its influence, increased the relative velocities of the asteroids and brought this process to such a state that the kinetic energy of the asteroids exceeded the gravitational one, and under such conditions they could no longer combine and form into a single body upon meeting. Rather, on the contrary, the collision led to mutual fragmentation, not unification. Alas, the Phaeton hypothesis was not confirmed. Sufficiently weighty arguments given above should not leave any doubts among respected users.
