Zinc ointment composition instruction. Zinc ointment useful properties

Zinc in importance for the body takes the second position, yielding primacy to iron. Its deficiency will primarily affect the hair and skin - they lose their healthy appearance, and wounds and cuts do not heal for a long time. It is a magical trace element. It deserves special attention and is worth taking a closer look at.

Zinc exhibits the highest activity in combination with oxygen (zinc oxide). It is in this form that it is presented in the zinc ointment, which will be discussed.

Composition and release form of the drug

Zinc oxide is produced in various forms (ointment, paste, liniment). All are for outdoor use only. The ointment contains 10 grams of zinc oxide and one hundred grams of petroleum jelly, which serves as a base and protects the skin from drying out.

The drug belongs to the group of absorbent, astringent and protective skin care products. Thanks to these properties, an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect is realized. The ointment dries well, therefore it is recommended for all processes with exudation (it gets wet and swells).

This usually occurs in the first phase of the wound process. For example, when there is an inflammatory fluid and fibrinous-necrotic plaque at the bottom of a trophic ulcer. At this point, water-soluble ointments, antiseptics in the form of a solution, dressings with sorbents, as well as enzymatic preparations are always used. Zinc ointment works great here too.

Important: the ointment is not used for purulent inflammation. First you need to get rid of pathogenic microbes (antibacterial) agents. Only after that, apply the medicine to a clean wound surface - it will dry out and accelerate healing.

The indications for the use of zinc ointment are: treatment and prevention of diaper dermatitis. Eczema, diaper rash, skin lesions (no pus). Burns, including sunburn, cuts, wounds.

If, when using the ointment for 7-10 days, the process does not subside, it is necessary to reconsider the treatment.

How does zinc ointment work?

How does zinc ointment help? Zinc is involved in the work of more than 300 enzymes involved in the process of cell division. During wound healing, active synthesis of new cells begins. It is important that there is enough zinc at this moment, the need for it increases sharply. Applying zinc ointment allows cells to divide properly and synthesize enough collagen to heal cuts.

Zinc oxide has the ability to attract water. Therefore, the wounds dry out, and the tissues seem to be stretched, creating conditions for healing.

Zinc affects the glands, in particular the sebaceous ones, reducing the production of fat, which has a beneficial effect on the elasticity of the skin and eliminates the blockage of the ducts.

Zinc oxide effectively blocks UV radiation. Therefore, zinc ointment has found application in sunscreens.

Due to its physicochemical properties, the ointment forms a protective barrier against the action of irritating factors - this provides the anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect of the drug.

The disinfecting effect of zinc ointment is based on the ability of metal ions to have a destructive effect on the protein of microbes, causing its destruction, which leads to the death of microorganisms. Of course, the ointment will not cope with a violent infectious process.

The astringent effect of the drug is realized through protein denaturation on the skin surface when exposed to zinc compounds.

What does Zinc Ointment help with? Instructions for use

From hemorrhoids

Zinc ointment is indicated for the treatment of external, uncomplicated hemorrhoids. It has the following effect:

  • eliminates itching, burning;
  • dries up;
  • relieves inflammation; irritation
  • tightens small wounds; cracks;
  • increases the protective properties of the skin in the anal area;
  • helps to shrink hemorrhoids.

The ointment is applied in a thin layer to the sore spot up to 6 times a day. This is usually done with a cotton swab or with your finger. Before application, the skin in the anal area is washed and dried.

Zinc ointment does not treat bacterial and fungal infections, as well as hemorrhoids with complications such as bleeding or entrapment.

For herpes

This unpleasant pathology is accompanied by a rash in the form of bubbles. They burst, a weeping surface is formed, which does not heal for a long time. Zinc ointment acts as a drying agent and accelerates the healing process.

From burns

In the instructions for use, zinc ointment has an indication for the treatment of burns. This effect is realized due to the participation of zinc in collagen synthesis. The regeneration process is accelerated, the burn area dries up, the inflammation subsides. These are beneficial factors in the treatment of burns.

In addition, the ointment creates a protective film on the sore surface, due to this, the pain is reduced. It is used 4-6 times a day, covering the burn area with a thin layer. The course of treatment is up to a month.

You can apply an ointment under the bandage. Treatment with zinc ointment is indicated for burns with redness and swelling without blisters. This stage is difficult and specialized help is required.

Diaper dermatitis in children

A well-proven ointment for the prevention of dermatitis in children. The ointment is applied to the baby's clean, dry skin (under the diaper), especially before going to bed. Thus, we prevent the appearance of skin inflammation in contact with wet linen and urine.

For the purpose of treatment, the ointment is applied three times a day in a thin layer (with each diaper change) when diaper rash or skin inflammation appears.

With psoriasis

Psoriasis of problem areas is difficult to treat. Hormonal ointments are powerful, while others are inconvenient or ineffective. It is in the axillary and inguinal zones that zinc ointment is used. It will dry, relieve itching.

By normalizing the processes of keratinization, reducing hyperkeratosis, it will stop the spread of psoriatic plaques. Does not apply to flaked surfaces. First you need keratolytic agents, and then zinc ointment. Or use salicylic-zinc ointment on the scales.

In psoriasis, zinc ointment has an advantage - it can be used during pregnancy and lactation. As a rule, it is recommended in combination with other products. Moreover, it quickly becomes addictive, therefore, after 3 weeks of treatment, a break is needed to restore sensitivity.

During pregnancy

The instructions of the drug indicate that when used externally, zinc ointment practically does not penetrate into the systemic circulation and does not have a resorptive effect.

These data allow the use of the ointment during pregnancy. Although research in this area is lacking, therefore, a more precise formulation sounds like this: use is possible if the benefits do not outweigh the risk to the fetus.

In addition, zinc ointments have proven effective. with calluses and cracked heels.

Application in cosmetology

Using expensive products in cosmetology, we do not realize that they are based on zinc. It is much easier and cheaper to remember about zinc ointment in time. Its proper use in a judicious combination with other ointments can be as effective as expensive products.

Apply zinc ointment for acne and acne (blackheads) in adolescents. It removes the focus of inflammation, swelling and pain inherent in acne. Also prevents acne from spreading to healthy areas.

Due to what it is possible to remove acne:

  • zinc reduces the production of secretion by the sebaceous glands;
  • reduces the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics,
  • normalizes the processes of skin epithelialization;
  • has a slight anti-inflammatory effect.

Basic rules for using zinc ointment for acne

The skin must be cleaned first, in no case should it be used together with decorative cosmetics. It is not yet known what compounds will result from the reaction. As a result, the number of acne can increase.

The maximum number of applications is 6 times a day. Ointment for mucous membranes (mouth, eyes) is not recommended. In case of contact, rinse with water.
You should not take breaks in treatment, it should be regular.

During the period of using zinc ointment, it is advisable to exclude foods rich in copper, soy protein. Additionally, get zinc from food (spinach, beans, nuts, eggs).

A more pronounced effect in reducing the production of subcutaneous fat has a combined agent - salicylic-zinc ointment (Lassar paste). In addition to zinc, it contains salicylic acid and starch.

Dermatologists advise modern remedies with active zinc ions in the treatment of these problems. For example, "Zinerit" (zinc acetate), gel "Curiosin" (zinc hyaluronate). These compounds turned out to be more powerful, but their cost is much higher.

How can you improve your face with zinc ointment?

It turns out that the ointment helps to remove wrinkles, smooths out minor blemishes and has a slight whitening effect.

Contraindications and side effects of zinc ointment

There are almost no contraindications and undesirable consequences from the use of the ointment in the instructions.

You can not use it for allergic reactions to the auxiliary components that make up the ointment. It is also better to cancel its use if the skin inflammation intensifies during the treatment process. Or itching, new rashes and other changes appeared at the site of application of the ointment.

Contraindicated for the treatment of purulent and fungal eruptions. It is not advisable to use zinc ointment for a dry face for a long time.

Cases of overdose with local use have not been established.

It should not be forgotten that the ointment is intended only for external use, and it is not advisable to lubricate the mucous membranes.

pharmachologic effect

Zinc oxide is a chemical compound of an inorganic nature. Outwardly, it looks like a white powder with a fine-grained structure. It is not exposed to alkali and acid, it is insoluble in water. A substance is made from mineral zincite, however, pharmacists have learned to extract it by means of a chemical synthetic reaction.

The main actions of zinc oxide are:

  • wound healing;
  • disinfecting.

It is thanks to them that zinc ointment for hemorrhoids is extremely common. In addition, the drug has an adsorbing and drying effect.

When applied topically, it helps to relieve inflammation and irritation, reduces exudation phenomena, forms a protective film that prevents bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms from entering the wound.

The auxiliary component of the drug prevents excessive drying of the skin and mucous membrane at the site of application, helps the early healing of wounds and cracks.

What does Zinc Ointment help with?

The range of application of zinc ointment, judging by the instructions, is very wide. So, it is indicated for various skin diseases and injuries, accompanied by the exudation process. These include:

How does zinc ointment work?

It is no coincidence that 9 out of 10 parts are petroleum jelly. Thanks to him, the ointment can be easily spread over large areas of the skin. It creates protection - a film, a kind of barrier that prevents external pollution.

At the same time it dries, softens and helps tissues regenerate. Zinc can be ointment, paste (with the addition of starch), cream (has a lighter texture).

Recently, the drug has been increasingly mentioned in cosmetic procedures. It is noticed that it gives the skin elasticity and healthy appearance, and successfully fights fine wrinkles.

On the basis of zinc ointment, creams, gels, and means for protecting the skin from the sun have been created. The whitening effect is observed when the ointment is applied to the freckles.

In a day, you can treat the site of injury up to 5-6 times, easily rubbing a small amount of ointment into the skin.

In the list of external drugs, there are only a few drugs that would satisfy all the requirements of the doctor and the patient. One of them - zinc ointment.
This tool has long and firmly entered clinical practice. Due to its safety, good effect, a small number of contraindications and, with all these advantages, a rather low price, it has been used for more than a hundred years. Now zinc ointment has begun to be ousted from pharmacy counters by other drugs. Instead of it, funds are often recommended that are more convenient to use or reinforced with additional therapeutic components.
However, none of them has such a multifaceted therapeutic effect as zinc ointment. In addition, the change in priorities is due not so much to the emergence of better drugs as to the natural development of pharmacology and the need to implement new drugs. Therefore, even when resorting to the help of modern drugs, remember that "in stock" you always have zinc ointment, which you can use with not the worst results.

Mechanism of action and indications for use

Zinc ointment has the simplest, if not to say, elementary composition. However, zinc oxide mixed with petroleum jelly has been successfully proving its right to exist for many years. Due to the five main components of the therapeutic effect, the ointment is good for the treatment of skin diseases.

    • Anti-inflammatory action

Zinc slows down the work of inflammatory mediators - biologically active substances that cause expansion of capillaries, accumulation of fluid in tissues and other changes that occur during the inflammatory process. Therefore, the product can be used for insect bites, acne (after they have opened), dermatitis, bedsores, etc.
Apply the ointment to the desired area, and after a few hours you will see that the skin has turned pale and not so tense, and the soreness of the lesion has noticeably decreased.

    • Prevention of suppuration

Zinc oxide has the ability to bind with proteins, due to which a protective film is created on the surface of the lesions, which prevents the development of bacteria and the appearance of infectious complications. In addition, the ointment absorbs water well, drawing out the ichor and inflammatory fluid. This deprives the microbes of the nutrient medium, so the infection does not develop.
Such a healing effect is very useful for a variety of diseases, from ordinary household injuries (burns, cuts) to scratching the skin with.

    • Drying action

This property is most valuable in acne treatment. If you are tired of seeing your face in the mirror, invariably covered with white dots from mature pustules, zinc ointment will definitely help you. After 3-4 days, you will notice that the points have become several times smaller, and the swelling and inflammation around them disappeared.
The ointment reduces the work of the sebaceous glands. So, if you have oily skin, this remedy will certainly not disappoint you.

    • Antiseptic action

Zinc ointment has little antimicrobial activity. Unfortunately, it is not strong enough to fight a severe infection, therefore, when treating purulent wounds, it must be supplemented with antibacterial drugs.

  • Regenerating action

If you still remember the school course in biology, then you probably know that zinc is one of the most important trace elements responsible for cell division. Therefore, when using zinc ointment, any damage heals much faster.

Use in pregnant women and children

The tool is absolutely safe, therefore, neither expectant mothers nor children have any restrictions on its use. Zinc ointment can be used from the first days of life, for example, in the treatment of diaper dermatitis.

Contraindications

Zinc ointment cannot be used only in case of intolerance, however, allergies to it are very rare.

Dosage

The drug is applied to previously cleansed skin 4-6 times a day. The course of treatment can vary. Small acne disappears in a few days, and, for example, with pressure sores and trophic ulcers, therapy can last up to a month or more. If we talk about the duration of the course, it would be most fair to determine the period "until recovery."

When zinc ointment does NOT work

Zinc ointment is an excellent remedy, but sometimes its effects are greatly overestimated.
Remember: if you are treating deep trophic ulcers, severe burns and other serious diseases, it should not become the only component of therapy. In such cases, the drug should be an adjunct rather than a base.
Some patients complain that zinc ointment does not help them. This happens with very wet wounds, especially with eczema: in fact, the continuously released liquid washes away the fatty base of the ointment and prevents it from creating a protective film. In these cases, dermatologists turn to the "like treats like" rule. If you have "wet" lesions, you need to use water-based products, for example, Tsindol - a liquid suspension of zinc oxide.
Contrary to popular beliefs, zinc does not protect from the sun and does not help with age spots, although it can paint them over for a while - after the ointment dries, white traces remain on the skin, like chalk. Also, the drug is completely unfairly "suspected" of being effective for and.
The best medicine is not always the most difficult, as can be seen from the example of zinc ointment. Despite the fact that this is a very old and extremely unpretentious remedy, it often helps where other drugs are powerless. An additional advantage is that the ointment does not require great accuracy in dosages and does not pose any health hazard, and patients almost never have any questions about its use. Therefore, it is successfully used by both patients recovering under the supervision of doctors, and those who decided to rush to the embrasure of self-medication.

The basis of zinc ointment is petroleum jelly. The amount of zinc oxide and petroleum jelly is 1:10. Various manufacturers add additional components to the main composition - menthol, fish oil, parabens, lanolin, mineral oils, wax. This determines the additional properties and price of the ointment.

The most affordable cost is for a simple composition (zinc oxide + petroleum jelly). More expensive - ointment with mineral oils and parabens. Some components (salicylic acid, sulfur) enhance the effect of the ointment.

Zinc and Salicylic Acid - Lassar Paste

The composition with salicylic acid is called salicylic-zinc ointment or Lassar paste. The composition was invented over 100 years ago by a dermatologist. It effectively treats acne and skin inflammations, has a noticeable whitening effect.

The salicylic component in the composition is a keratolytic, it enhances the antiseptic properties of the paste. The keratolytic properties of salicil allow the use of an ointment to soften calluses.

Salicylic acid often causes skin irritation and allergic reactions. Therefore, it is not used during pregnancy and in pediatrics (children under 12 years of age are not treated).

Sulfur and zinc

The antiseptic effect of zinc oxide is relatively weak. Therefore, it is used for skin irritations and is not used for purulent wounds, infections.

What the ointment does:

- Dries up (used for "weeping" wounds).

- Relieves inflammation (from reddened areas of irritated skin).

- Reduces swelling (due to reduced inflammation).

- Accelerates skin epithelization, regeneration and formation of new skin cells, wound healing.

- Protects against irritating factors. As a result, zinc oxide is incorporated into sunscreens (sun protection).

What zinc ointment protects the skin from:

- From ultraviolet radiation.

- From excessive sebum secretion (reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands).

- From germs (disinfects).

Zinc is said to be a safe ingredient and is added to cream for pregnant women and newborn babies.

Apply an ointment for purulent skin inflammations. Zinc composition is smeared with dermatitis, diaper rash, bedsores. It is emphasized that zinc treats those inflammatory processes that are accompanied by the release of exudate (liquid).
