Here came the 21st century with its critical thinking and scientific progress - and Shelton's so popular theory was harshly criticized by nutritionists and doctors. What is the essence of the problem and who should you listen to in this matter?

What it is?

Separate food is a whole system designed based on the compatibility and incompatibility of products. Its authors are Herbert Shelton and William Howard Hay. The first is an American naturopath, vegetarian, and alternative medicine follower. Despite the fact that it was he who described in detail the basic principles of this theory, the idea itself is far from new: references to it can be found in the works of both Hippocrates and Avicenna. The second author is more indirectly related to this development, but at least he had a medical degree: Hay was a surgeon.

In 1928, from the pen of Shelton came out his creation entitled "The correct combination food products", Which since the middle of the XX century has become practically a reference book for many Hollywood actresses. At that time, there was not yet such a huge selection of all kinds of diets, so separate nutrition was perceived as one of the surest ways to lose weight, although initially its authors did not at all put such an idea into this concept. Their primary task was to promote the health of the body.

But already at that time, most nutritionists and doctors opposed this system, scientifically refuting almost all of its postulates. To date, their criticism has been confirmed, and separate nutrition has been finally overthrown by modern science from the pedestal of the best method for losing weight and improving the body. Despite this, many stars and ordinary people continue to live by her postulates and claim that the results exceed all expectations, despite persecution and refutation.

The basic principles of separate feeding:

  • division of all products into several groups: some are combined with each other and can be eaten together, some are not at all “friendly” (for example, potatoes with chicken breast is a bad tandem, since the first refers to carbohydrates, and the second to proteins );
  • minimum heat treatment of dishes;
  • availability of a list of prohibited (harmful) products;
  • adherence to certain breaks between meals.

There are several variations of separate feeding systems by different authors, but these principles are the same for everyone.

Systems

According to Herbert Shelton

If we take separate meals according to Shelton, then all his products are classified into 5 groups:

  • proteinaceous;
  • carbohydrate-containing;
  • fats;
  • sour and semi-sour;
  • non-starchy.

Shelton argued that the conditions for the digestion of these food groups differ significantly. When the same food enters the stomach, enzymes to break it down function more efficiently than when they have to be torn between processing, for example, carbohydrates and proteins at the same time. Eating one type of food greatly facilitates digestion and speeds up metabolism. Whereas with the usual (mixed) diet, to which we are all accustomed, the activity of enzymes is inhibited, the processes of digestion of food are disrupted, which leads to fermentation and decay, intoxication, flatulence, metabolic disorders and excess weight.

But all this is just the theory of Shelton, who, alas, did not have a medical education. Scientifically, it has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, it is his table that is considered the classic basis for all other techniques. In the future, the article will consider possible and forbidden combinations, based on it.

According to Semyonova

Nadezhda Alekseevna Semyonova - folk healer, candidate of biological sciences, is the author of a special formula for separate nutrition. She divides all products into only 3 groups:

  • first -;
  • the second - plants and animals;
  • third -.

Her scheme is a more simplified Shelton program. She deduced the following rules for the compatibility of products between these groups:

  • combining groups 1 and 3 - under the strictest prohibition, as it is dangerous to health;
  • combinations of 1 and 2/2 and 3 groups are allowed;

  • melon is not included in any group and is not compatible with anything.

In addition, the Semyonova system has characteristic features that distinguish it from Shelton's concept:

  • special attention is paid to honey, which regulates the concentration of calcium in the body: it must be consumed daily;
  • the interval between meals should be at least 2 hours;
  • systematically the body needs to arrange.

Many people prefer a separate diet according to the Semyonova method, mainly for two reasons. Firstly, it has a simplified scheme for dividing products into groups, which means that it is much easier to figure out what is combined with what. Secondly, in her book, she describes in detail not only the menu, but also recipes for suitable dishes for each day of the week, which is very convenient.

There are also separate feeding systems for Indra Devi, Paul Bragg and other specialists. But their innovation lies only in the fact that they separate sulfur-containing products into a separate group (cabbage, turnips, eggs, garlic, etc.). In their opinion, they are completely incompatible with starches.

Slimming benefits

Shelton developed his system not for losing weight, but for improving the body. First of all, it was aimed at improving digestion. But, as practice has shown and the same examples of Hollywood and Russian stars, adherence to its basic principles most often led to getting rid of excess weight. Therefore, this concept began to be considered not as a therapeutic one, but as a common dietary one.

Why, in most cases, people, adhering to a separate diet, lose weight, despite the scientific refutation of this system? The reasons are not at all in the compatibility-incompatibility of products and not in the enzymes that break them down. Weight loss is dictated by lifestyle changes:

  • adherence to the diet leads to an addiction of the organism, which knows that at certain hours it will receive the nutrients it needs, which means that it does not put anything in reserve;
  • the list of prohibited foods excludes harmful, high-calorie foods;
  • the basis of the diet is vegetables and proteins, fats are allowed, but they are used in minimal quantities on the menu;

You don't need to hope for quick results, but you can still lose weight on a separate diet, minus about 1 kg every week. Yes, it is long-term, but the lost kilograms will not return if you continue to adhere to separate or at least proper nutrition.

Why does the separate feeding system not stand up to scientific scrutiny? What's wrong with it? Why do nutritionists and scientists consider most of Shelton's claims to be wrong?

Compatibility of products

You cannot combine:

  • proteins with starches (meat with bread);

Salad cooking rules

  1. Vegetables should be fresh, strong, rinsed and dried well.

The Hay split food got its name in honor of its developer - the American doctor Howard Hay. Vegetables and fruits are taken as the basis of nutrition in this diet. But proteins and carbohydrates should be consumed separately from each other.

Howard Hay was of the opinion that many human diseases arise from increased acidity in the body. He was firmly convinced that the body, assimilating simultaneously the carbohydrates and proteins contained in food, stimulates fermentation and fermentation in the intestine.   • bananas and dried fruits.

This group includes:

  • fish,
  • low-fat dairy products,
  • soy and egg white.

This includes a large group of products, in particular:

  • vegetables,
  • germinated crops,
  • mushrooms,
  • nuts,
  • cream and herbs.

At the same time, whole grains, fruits and various vegetables are considered alkaline foods, while meat, fish and milk are considered acidic foods.

Several hours should elapse between the consumption of acidic and alkaline foods so that they do not have the opportunity to mix. But products from the neutral group can be combined and combined in any order and ratio.


But scientists are very critical of the division of products into the groups listed above. This classification, science claims, is fundamentally wrong and questionable, because many food products contain both carbohydrates and proteins at the same time, which does not allow them to be attributed to one or another group. Milk is a separate food, not a drink. Once in the stomach, milk should curdle under the influence of acidic juices. It is not recommended to mix animal and vegetable fats and products containing them: you do not need to cook meat with the addition of vegetable oil or get carried away with "Greek" salad with feta cheese and olive oil. For the same reason, mayonnaise is completely unacceptable - a mixture of vegetable oil with egg yolk containing animal fat.

Instead of bread, a vegetable side dish is suitable for animal food.

Ideally: fermented milk products are incompatible with carbohydrates (yoghurts with muesli, potatoes with kefir, fermented milk sauces with cereals).

However, there is also a non-radical approach: if their fat content is 1%, the combination is possible. Therefore, sandwiches (bread - carbohydrate, and cheese - protein) are canceled, eat cheese with vegetables.

Melon and watermelon - nothing at all, as an independent meal. Also, peaches, blueberries, blueberries, grapes should be consumed separately.

Starchy foods: wheat, rye, oats and products from them (bread, pasta, etc.); cereals: buckwheat, rice, millet, etc.; potatoes, chestnuts, ripe corn. Ideally combined with herbs, fats and all vegetables. It is also allowed to combine various types of starches with each other, but such combinations are not recommended for people who are prone to overweight. In addition, various cereals and grains differ greatly in protein composition, and ideally, it is better not to mix them. For example, potatoes, cereals with bread, legumes with bread. When consuming starchy foods with fats, it is also recommended to eat something from greens or vegetables. Combinations of starches with proteins, especially animals (bread with meat, potatoes with fish), with milk and fermented milk products (porridge with milk, kefir with bread), with sugars (roll with jam, porridge with sugar), with any fruits and fruits are harmful juices.

Protein foods: meat, fish, eggs; cottage cheese, cheese, feta cheese; milk, yogurt, kefir, etc.; dry beans, beans, lentils and peas; nuts, seeds; mushrooms. Ideal with herbs and compatible vegetables. Moreover, these foods promote good protein digestion and the removal of many toxic compounds.

It is permissible to eat proteins with fats, and animal proteins are better combined with animal fats, and vegetable proteins- and with vegetable fats, but fats slow down digestion, therefore, ideally, it is advisable to add vegetables and herbs to the combination of proteins with fats, or avoid combining proteins with animal and vegetable fats.

Fats are ideally combined with herbs, vegetables (salad with sour cream), with starchy foods (porridge with butter). Sometimes it is permissible to combine fats with fruits, especially berries (strawberries with sour cream). Do not combine fats with sugars (cream with sugar, confectionery). It is also not recommended to jointly use animal and vegetable fats, although exceptions are possible. Vegetable oil, for example, goes relatively well with fish, which contains unsaturated fatty acids, and much worse with meat. Ghee is often combined with other foods better than butter.

Sahara: white and yellow sugar, fructose, jam, syrups, honey, molasses. In combination with proteins and starches, they cause fermentation, contribute to spoilage and other products

A more radical approach from Shelton helps eliminate bloating and dysbiosis. That is, even keeping kilograms, you lose centimeters at the waist - and this is important.

Why is a mono diet or one food per meal good for you?

Mono-nutrition has a huge success in achieving a cure for diseases, it can also be attributed to the radical method of separate nutrition: one product at one meal.

To digest each nutrient, the body produces the appropriate enzymes. If one type of food enters the stomach - its task is simple, if two types - the task becomes more complicated, additional enzymes are needed, if there are three types - the set of enzymes and processing features triples. And if the dish is very complex and multicomponent, or if it is a sequence of different dishes, then the set of required enzymes and the load on the stomach, respectively, become very large. If food remains undigested, not properly processed, it is sent to a "deposit", only if in the sense of a bank account it is very good, then in the case of the body it is the deposition of fat reserves in connective tissues. At best, this situation leads to intestinal rotting and intoxication.
